“I taught myself how to ski,” says the twenty- odd Shawn Rush of his first experience on the slopes. “I was up on the lift, and when I went to jump off, I fell and cracked my head.” He laughs, and then goes on to tell me that after several times of doing that, by the time he decided to get a lesson he was no longer falling and was the first one of his group ready to hit the slopes.
The rapper/writer/ producer is really into his music but says that it is not is first love. “My passion is movies; writing them, producing them, directing them; I want to do it all,” the Bronx native proclaims, pride visible in his features. Personally, I believe his goal isn’t that far fetched; the communications major has already won an award for a screen play he scripted titled Jonathan Parks: a case of mistaken identity. To the layman, Shawn Rush may look like just another stern-faced rapper from the gritty side of New York, but dig deeper, and you’ll discover a self- proclaimed goof ball with a 3.9 GPA selected for the president’s list, as well as being invited to pledge numerous prestigious fraternities. Shawn first started writing creatively at 9, putting his thoughts on paper, in no particular order, and thoroughly enjoying himself while doing so. As life went on, he got older, his talent grew, and so did the attention.

But even though Shawn Rush may now be in the public eye, exposing himself to more pressure, scrutiny, and criticism, he says creating is still as fun for him now as it was when he was a kid.
There was a time when Shawn had to put his dreams on hold; his best friend had lost his mother and Shawn new that if he wasn’t there to provide strong support, his friend would be lost as well.
That time without music helped Shawn Rush put things into perspective. “The whole time I wasn’t doin’ music, it was in the back of my mind, naggin’ me; I knew I had to go back to it.”
Now Shawn is back on the scene, more focused than ever, and set to blow up. When asked about his future with Playground Records, and the town its in, Shawn just smiles. “I love this town; it has real people going through real struggles. As for Playground, Call me cocky, but I’m the guy that’s gonna put this label on the map.
Ha-ha, you got that right Shawn.
